Phase 1 — Documentation and quality-system evidence

Request the quality-system certificate and its scope
Ask for the ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 certificate and read the scope statement, not just the logo. A certificate scoped to “cable assembly” at a different address than your build site is a red flag. For any harness carrying safety or signal-integrity risk, confirm the supplier runs 100% continuity and hipot testing, not a sampling plan. Ask to see the test-adapter build process — the adapter is where a lazy supplier hides coverage gaps.

Phase 4 — Commercial and continuity
The last phase is the one procurement is best equipped to run and most likely to rush: can this supplier keep shipping your program without a surprise?

- Capacity headroom. Ask what share of the plant your program would represent at full volume. A supplier where you would be 70% of capacity is a single-customer risk to them and a continuity risk to you.
